Two-envelopes paradox

It seems quite easy to take a decisión when we know all data of the various offers.

But when we have only a part of them, if we don’t set out the problem in a correct way, we come across the ‘election paradox’.

In our story, Laudrup has to take a decision on two offers, but he only knows perfectly one of them. As we advance on the solution, the choice becomes more difficult.

Do you know the name of the new forward?

A Greek team signs a new player.

It's a secret between the club owner and the director of a sports newspaper. But it begins to run by SMS.
All will lead us to the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio.

By the way, we'll find spirals, sunflowers, pine cones, shells, roots and leaves, methods to win on sport bettings, violins, the Vitruvian man... ah! and a bit of Maths, of course.

I hope you will enjoy the new story of  Matifutbol: Fibonacci also plays football

The amazing case of the extra car.

The amazing case of the extra car

The sponsor of the Football World Championship 2015 in Canada i going to give away some gifts to the best scorers. But a last minute change in the number of gifts creates a curious change in their apportionment.

Try to find out what happens!

Friendly friday.

Friendship has been one of the areas in which the extension of social networking has had the greatest impact.

The dictionary defines friendship as "Personal affection, pure and selfless, shared with another person, which is born and is strengthened by the deal". Maybe we should revise this definition, or maybe not.

Today, thanks to Internet, we are connected with our lifelong friends, and with the most recent ones. Friends who have drunk with us many beers, and other ones with who we haven’t taken any at all. Friends who were there in difficult times, and others that I’m sure they will be there in the future. Friends who share likes, and others diametrically different. Friends from the school, institute, college. Co-workers and family, and in spite of it, folks. And some new acquaintances installed in the category of friends, and may be they’ll be so, because of the definition.

From time to time we look askance at the friends counter of our friends. Sometimes with curiosity, other times with some envy, or indifference, or admiration. We are used to measure everything, to quantify all aspects of life, as if the amount were the important, and friendship doesn’t escape from this contemporary fashion.

Some people are even obsessed with it. My new entry in Matifubol is dedicated to them, and to everybody in general. Hope you like it: Breakfast at Les Deux Magots.

And thanks for being there, even if you don’t feel like reading it. Or if you don’t like it.

Have a great weekend.

Press, stats and football charts.

It's difficult to agree on what we know, when each one uses different data.

But when we all start from the same data, should not always reach the same conclusions?

A story which mixes paradoxes statistics, charts, news media, index numbers, sports trophies, data tables, economic results, football clubs and contrary opinions.

And where everyone seeks to be right...

A black (and red) hole

Thanks to the prize of the proceeds of a footbal match, we can learn about some nombers that attract the others so that they can escape from them.

Mathematical sequences which lead to mathematical black holes.

Thanks

Many thanks to all those who visited my website during this first year of Matifutbol.

Thanks to all those who liked it, to those who share it, to those who propose new ways of solving the problems, to those who detected the errors I made; to all the 25.000 internauts from all the world who visited Matifutbol.

For the next twelve months, I'll keep on making more stories, in order to help you teach Maths to your students. I hope you'll like them.

Let's give away some balls!

A new story based on close packing and geometry.

Organizers of Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup want to give away some official balls.

We face a close-packing problem in order to know if we can fill Maracana stadium with enough balls to satisfy the Championship organizers' wishes.

The problem of the fair division

Some African football players are going to play a benefit match.

Eto'o and Drogba have been designed captains of the two teams, but they don't know how to split the rest of the players in two teams.

Do you know how can they do a fair distribution so that both will be satisfied?

Do you dare to manage this new problem of lateral thinking?

A benefit match

It's Christmas Day, and it's been held a benefit match on the Misunderstood Mathematics.

A player is sustituted, and the average age of the team rises 2 years.

With this data, we work out an interesting essay on arithmetic means and their variations related to the members of the group.

Does anyone tell the truth?

A simple substitution becomes complicated by some players who lie or tell the truth depending on their position in the playing field.

An adaptation to the world of football of the Lewis Carroll's paradox about a caterpillar and a lizard.
